Types of Daycare in Tokyo
i) Authorized daycare(Ninkahoikuen)
Daycare that meets criterias of the government. There are enough staffs and enough space to safely take care children. And such, it has been authorized by the country and partially funded by the country. So the fees are less. Therefore, it is the most competitive daycare to enroll.
ii) Certified daycare(Ninsyo hoikuen)
Daycare that meets criterias of the authority of Tokyo. It is difficult to meet the criterias of the country, especially cities like Tokyo. The criterias more fit the environment of the urban area. Usually, the number of children are less than type i).
iii) Unauthorized daycare(Ninkagaihoikuen)
Daycare that does not have any authorization. Usually run by private corporate. It is not funded by the government or the city, the fees are expensive. Approx ¥100,000 or more.
iv) Childcare room(Hoikushitsu)
Only those who are not accepted by type i) have a right to apply. The size is smaller than type I) and ii), and the fees are almost half. It is run by the ward/ private corporate. This is a specific system of Shibuya-ku.
v) Daycare for sick children(Byoujihoiku)
Children who have a fever(37.5℃ or more) is not accepted by daycare. Also, if there is any symptom that doctors don’t allow them to go to daycares, you can take children to this daycare.
vi) Baby sitters
People who were not accepted by I), iii) can apply for the baby sitter which is partially funded by the ward. The baby sitters are dispatched from private corporate. This is specific system of Shibuya-ku.
